Parenting may be the hardest yet most important–and ultimately the most rewarding–work a person can do. But parenting know-how does not come automatically.

Between Parent and Child may be the best parenting book ever written. Since it was first published in 1965 it has sold millions of copies. It is on the short list of all-time great self-help books in The Authoritative Guide to Self-Help Books. What is it so popular?

In a time when many parent advisors recommended therapy for parents, Haim Ginott believed that most parents merely needed better information. So, based on his experience working with troubled children, he taught parents how to talk with their children.

Perhaps Haimís genius was helping parents capture the meaning behind childrenís words and deeds. There is nothing quite as
soothing for children as being understood. There is nothing quite as helpful for solving parenting problems as the feeling of parents and children working together.

Ginott’s approach was unique because he joined great compassion with solid limits. Perhaps that is why his book has become a classic. Newly revised and updated (by Haim’s widow and Arkansas Wally Goddard), the book continues to be a superb guide for parents.
